Women’s Rugby is the Future

‘All the physical comes from the mental’ – Clara Hughes

At its roots, Australia is a sporting nation.

We cheer and support our athletes and favourite teams, locally and internationally, as they strive to win their games by pushing themselves to the limits. Our children are ushered into the many junior sports clubs that we are

Dedicating yourself to a sport can be hard decision to make. There’s a lot to think of juggling. School university, jobs, children, friends and family, awkward scheduling – all of these work against you when you want to try to play sport.

However, Rugby is a friendly game that caters to everyone who wishes to play, no matter the level, skill, size, ability or schedule.

Health and Fitness

With the majority of school and work being an indoor activity, it’s hard to maintain the 30 minutes of exercise that the World Health Organisation recommends at least five days a week.

Health and fitness is one of the main motivators for many who are trying to keep themselves healthy for the future, and avoid all the health complications that come from inactivity.

There’s no better way to keep yourself active than exercising with friends, and there’s no better way to do that than joining a team sport.

Sevens rugby aims for players that are quick on their feet, able to run the field for the duration of the game while keeping a head for the prize. Whether you’re playing for leisure as a social game, or playing competitively, training can target a variety of exercises such as agility training and conditioning, fitness based exercises, weights and more, all alongside your teammates.

Not only that, exercise is proven to have a great effect on improving and stabilising mental health. With rugby training usually on a set schedule, it’s easy to timetable and get yourself settled into your game commitments.

It’s a great driver to get yourself to the strongest state you wish to be, and become truly unstoppable.

Don’t miss the shot because you didn’t take the opportunity.

Fun and Social

Rugby is, ultimately, a team sport!

Sevens rugby is a fun, engaging and social game because you rely on your fellow teammates to get the win for your team.

Lifelong bonds are made through training, playing and sharing your wins and losses with your team members. Friends made who are passionate about the same sports as you as you all go through the hard yards.

Don’t miss the shot because you didn’t take the opportunity.

Pathways and Opportunities

But most of all, the scenery of rugby has changed since in the past 5 years. World Rugby has dedicated itself to women’s rugby as the growth of rugby’s future.

Rejecting the preconceived notions that rugby isn’t a sport suited for women, more women than ever before are enjoying the team spirit, solidarity and strength that playing rugby provides it’s players.

They have proved naysayers, that rugby is not a women’s sport, wrong – 2.7 million women play rugby today, worldwide.

There are junior, local, state, national and international competitions that support any aspiring rugby athlete on a smooth path towards honing their skills, being supported on the next step of their athlete journey, and make a career out of a passion of professional sport.

For some, it’s more than a social sport. Rugby may be what they want as a career.

Now, no-one is stopping you. Opportunities are opening as we speak.
